The Story Behind

Stramp was created by Peter Strüven in Hamburg, Germany and produced amp's and other electronic equipment during the '70 and '80. Most famous are his guitar amps he produced for Rory Gallagher, Leslie West, in the early '70. Sadly Peter Strüven died in 2000.

This amp (100W head and 4*12" cabinet) was built for Leslie West in the early '70. The professional series was covered in red, whereas normal output was done in black. The cabinet was modified by Leslie to fit it with Celestion speakers.

Leslie remembers his first encounter with Stramp (in an interview with Fred Stuckey from 1972:

'I was over in Germany doing a TV show, and this guy had some amps there. I tried them out and gave him some advice about changing a few things like the speakers,' he says. Those amps, the Stramp brand, will soon be available on the market as the Leslie West Professional Series. On stage and in the the studio he uses two stacks of the Stramp amplifiers to get a sound that he thinks is similar to Marshall amp distortion. West claims that one of the advantages of the Stramp amplifier is that it is less prone to “blowing up” than the Marshall amplifier. 'My amps don't have a ground switch. I can't explain it to you, but I've a funny feeling that is why they don't blow up. Those amps feel like little bulldogs,' He says. The Stramp amplifiers have 100-watt brains and metal grilles to prevent the 12” Celestion speakers from being punctured. Interested musicians will ultimately be able to order Stramp amplifiers that will be exactly the same in all details as the ones used by Leslie West during live performances. Guitar players often order amps used by professionals because of the sound professionals get with the equipment. What they don't realise, West says, is that they wind up with amplifiers from the factory that don't sound the same.

Later the rig was used by Rusty Anderson, best known as lead guitarist with Paul McCartney.
