The Story Behind

About the Builder:

Bill Asher, founder and owner of 'Asher Guitars & Lap Steels' (formerly 'Guitar Traditions'), has a diverse and extensive career in the guitar business as a master luthier and has worked with an impressive list of clients including Grammy Award winners and Billboard Chart topping musicians. Asher began his career in 1982 as an apprentice at a Los Angeles guitar making and repair shop run by Jeff Lunsford. In 1985 he opened his own retail shop providing the highest quality guitar work built on his natural gift as a craftsman, having creative solutions and excellent customer service. After selling his store in 1987, he continued broadening his knowledge in guitar repair and the business in general by working with highly respected guitar makers such as Rick Turner and Mark Lacey - helping them manage and lead their shops in vintage restoration and repair, guitar sales and marketing, and custom design and creation. Through the years, Asher has established a huge list of loyal clientele including over 1000 musicians, vintage dealers and collectors. The Asher Slide Guitar has appeared on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine (Dec. 1999) with rock star Ben Harper. Since then, Asher has continued to be sought after by musicians, collectors and dealers-alike for his impeccable and creative work.

About the Guitar:

This instrument, is not only a very fine quality guitar, but is also a piece of rock memorabilia as well! This Electro Sonic guitar is hand made by California luthier Bill Asher. Bill is known for his high standards, low production numbers and his high quality guitars and lap steels. This guitar is one of only 8 made to these specs!!

Inspired by Asher's lap steel, the Electro Sonic guitar is designed for bottle-neck players and guitarists looking for fat tone and great sustain. The neck is hand carved with a smooth transition into the body for easy access to the upper frets. This instrument has perfectly detailed fret work and the final set up, which is performed by Bill Asher himself, insures the guitar's professional feel and brilliant performance.

It was owned by Bush guitarist Chris Traynor, and was among others used by Chris on the most recent Bush record "The Sea Of Memories" which included their number 1 hit song "The Sound of Winter".  It was also used live during the Sunset Strip Music Festival August 2011.

This neck through and chambered guitar features an african mahogany body and flame maple top resonating extremely well together, and the Asher custom wound mini humbucking pickups scream with vengeance!!

The sound is extremely well balanced from bass to treble, with an overall fat tone and incredible sustain. The varitone knob allows for a huge amount of versatility and tonal options.

The hand carved 2 piece quarter sawn African Mahogany neck has a smooth transition to the body for unbelievably easy access to the higher frets, and has a nice beefy profile to it.

The tobacco sunburst nitro finish has a look that you just can’t get from any other type of finish. The luster of the flame top is matched only by the gorgeous grain of the mahogany back and neck, and the pattern on the Madagascar rosewood board is exquisite.
